Upgrading
When you upgrade an item, you are increasing the level of one of its stats. There are a few things you should know before you start upgrading your items.
- If an upgrade fails the both the gem and the item will break.
- Items have safe levels, where an item's stat can be upgraded without fail. As the overall item level goes up, this safe level also goes up.
- Even when you fail and break an item you still get some Gem Shards back!
Upgrading Jewelry, Level 1-10 Equipment, & Level 12 Equipment
In order to upgrade a stat on a necklace, bracelet/band, ring, level 1-10 equipment, and level 12 equipment you must use one of the following 4 gems:

Upgrading Level 11 Equipment
Level 11 items can be upgraded through the use of 1 of 6 gems:

Upgrading Level 13 Equipment
You need to use Clonium Gems and Clonium Choice gems to upgrade level 13 equipment.

Upgrading Level 14 Equipment
You need to use Beryllium Gems and Beryllium Choice gems to upgrade level 14 equipment.

Upgrading Earrings
Earrings can only be upgraded by using an Aquamarine Gem on the earring. They can also only be upgraded once every 30 minutes (15 minutes for Season Characters). Finally, if the upgrade fails, while upgrading an earring, don't worry about it! The earring will not break; you will simply lose the Aquamarine Gem.

Gem Shards & Supreme Gems
When you break an item due to upgrading, you are awarded Gem Shards from the gem you used to upgrade the item. The amount of Gem Shards you gain is equal to the level of the stat point that was being upgraded. Once you have 500 of the same Gem Shard you can combine these shards into a Supreme Gem.
Supreme Gems work like their normal counterparts, they have the same upgrade rates. However, if the gem fails to upgrade the item, only the gem will be lost. In other words, it protects your item!
Supreme Gems do NOT work on specialty equipment (Anything that is .5 in level, such as Eonic Weapons & Clergy/Sephiroth Gowns) or reforged item stats.
